Spotlight on… Greg Downey

Belfast-born Greg began DJing over six years ago, shortly before he decided to pack up and move to Ibiza for the summer with his records. While playing at a dingy San Antonio after-party, he was spotted by the promoter of Gatecrasher, who was so impressed he asked him to play the following week at Space. Since then, Greg has worked hard to establish himself firmly among the best young DJs in the UK, recently voted Number 82 in the DJ Mag Top 100 DJ Poll..

Greg, how are you? So, you are returning to Godskitchen at the end of the month, starting to become a bit of a regular occurrence this isn’t it!
Its great to be appearing regularly at Godskitchen, I love playing there and always have a great time with everyone involved in the night, long may it continue :)

Tell us what you’ve been up to over the summer?
Summer has been quality, I’ve been doing much of the same , working hard in the studio on ideas for my new singles, have some cool bits underway. My two releases Send The Gods and From Above on Reset/Spinnin did well this summer which was pleasing. Gigswise I just got back from Lebanon, interesting, its a really quality city, not what I expected at all. I recently had a gig that was probably the highlight f my career, a 5 hour set in Buenos Aires. The crowd and vibe there are 2nd to none, they really know their shit and party to the end, I loved it.

Did you get chance to grab a holiday whilst on your travels?
I did yes, I went to Ibiza with 21 of my scouse mates for a stag do, it was unbelievable, dont think I’ve laughed so much in all my life. I spent four summers in ibiza years ago and got sick of the place so after a 5 year break it was great to go back on holiday rather than working, I’ve definately found a new love for the place. Was nice to hear some new sounds in Pacha and Space, Sander Kleinenberg and Joris Voorn were highlights for me.

What have been your big tracks of the summer?
My big tracks this summer:
Pryda – Niton
Simon Patterson – Latika
Greg Downey – From Above
Scot Project – Ghost

You’re a fan of Mixed Martial Arts, does this mean if we ever get into a spot of bother I can count on you to have my back haha! How long have you been into it?
Lol of course, id try my best! I love Muay Thai, I’ve been doing it on and off for about a year and a half. Its a really intense sport but I like the fact that its traditional and respectful to the history of it. When I lived in London I used to train 4-5 times a week but moving to Belfast upset the pattern a bit because I couldn’t find a good place to train over here. I’ve recently found one though and I am going to Thailand in January for a month to train over there, they train 7 hrs a day 6 days a week so will be a challenge to say the least but good for the mind !!

A football fan also I might add, what are your predictions for the season ahead? (Man United will win nothing, I promise you that)
haha, yeah right! and who do you support?? Looks like we just nicked 3 points from Valencia as I type this!! United need to tighten up at the back thats for sure to compete with Chelsea this year. Chelsea look strong, but I predict a Premier League and Champions League double for United, gotta have belief!

I support Arsenal for the record, Greg ;-)

Back onto music, you finally managed to released your version of Mansun after years of trying, how did that do? (I think I actually heard Scott Mills play it on Radio 1 so fair play)
Yeah Wide Open Space did pretty well, it was a great feeling to hear one of your tracks on daytime Radio One cause it is something that is very difficult to cross over too. I think if we could have got the go ahead to release the track when the first remix I did came to light , then we would really have been onto a winner because by the time 2 years had passed it had kinda lost its initial impact, but its one of those things you gotta try. Its been great though becuase I’ve made a close mate out of it in the lead singer Paul Draper, he’s a legend and we are soon going to start writing some new songs together.

What can we look forward to hearing from you in the next few months?
I think Im going to hold back on releasing any new singles until earlier next year because Ive had 5 in 2010, but there are lots of new ones underway. Ive nearly finished a new track called Game Face, its a totally different vibe, 125bpm melodic technoish track, I’m really pleased with it, I’m just trying to decide whether to put it out under an alias name or not. Follow ups for Global Code and Send The Gods, they are shaping up really well. Me and Simon Patterson have been working on a track for a year! Its nearly there, we are just trying to get the vocal nailed. Most of these will be out before next summer id say.

Finally, with the party being a Pimps & Whores Party, will you be dressing up for the occasion?
I might do, if I do I’ll probably dress as a whore though, just to keep it interesting!

You can catch Greg this Saturday 30th October at Godskitchen.

Jordan Suckley Interview & Mix

Jordan Suckley is a name that has quickly made people’s tongues wag on the dance scene over the last couple of years. This is why he was snapped up by the almighty PFAgency as their fresh signing in 2009, who also host other huge artists such as Eddie Halliwell and John O’Callaghan.

2010 has already seen Jordan’s recent tracks smashing the charts getting in to the top 5 and having A-List DJ support, which clearly shows the popularity of his productions world wide! Jordan has also had releases on heavy weight labels Reset and Armada and has more lined up throughout the rest of the year!

Here we had a chat with Jordan to see what’s going on in his world right now. There is also a promo mix to download at the end. Enjoy!

Hello Jordan, where do we find you on this fine (well, cold actually) day?
Sat in my studio working on a new single for Reset, drinking too much Coffee & wondering where this year went!

You’re going to be joining us at the xmas party on 18th December, what can the folks expect?
Music wise I will be playing a mixture of styles along with some of my new tracks which havent been played out yet! Also all of the Fire it up team are out so its going to be a wild one!!

For the sake of those who may not know too much about you, tell us how it all began for you…..
I won a DJ Competition wen I was 18 and the prize was a set at Nation (Cream) in Liverpool. Following that I started playing for Gatecrasher & Godskitchen tours in Wales & Bristol which lead on to Goodgreef showing interest and getting me on at their events. Then in January 2009, the guys at the PFA & Goodgreef office asked me in for a meeting and I wasnt sure what for. They said they liked my technical side of DJing and asked if I would like to come on to the agency, which was fantastic and I was over the moon and still am today! Its been a very crazy two years for me since then! Dream come true!

And how did you get involved with the Goodgreef/PFA crew?
Barry from Goodgreef had seen me play at a few events and then asked me to play for his side event at the time called Native, which then lead on to playing for Goodgreef @ Sankeys and various other events for them. Soon after that they got me on board!

You’ve recently delved into the realms of production as well haven’t you, Tarzan in particular seemed to go down really well. What’s next in store on the production front?
Yeah I really do enjoy producing! Since I became full time with music my weeks consist of working on music all week and then Djing at the weekends, so I have lots of spare time to spend producing during the week now.

I have lots of new tracks on the way and two VERY big remixes coming up, which I have to keep quiet about for the moment I am told. Also I have a new vocal track and various other releases on Spinnin/ Reset lined up for next year! Also possible collabs next year with Ben Gold, Ummet Ozcan & Joint Operations Centre! Busy busy!

I’ve seen a few videos of you getting to grips with Traktor as well, what set up are you using?
I really like Traktor & the X1 controller, because I love gadgets & the technical side of Djing and what you can do with it. But I have only used it in clubs a hand full of times, due to the issue of so many wires to plug in and getting in the way of the DJ before/ after. Also its not always easy plugging things in to a mixer after a few shandies ha! :)

I still use 3 CDJ’s, DJM 800 & EFX 1000 at the moment mainly, although I use Traktor now and then if I dont think it will be an issue at a particular gig!

When do you think you’ll start integrating your Traktor set up into your live performances?
I am easing myself in with it because I have seen too many people rush it in to a club and then it keeps cutting out or not working for them properly because they havent learnt the software thoroughly enough. I am in no rush to fully convert my DJ set up just yet anyway, its all a bit of fun at the moment! However, I used it last weekend at my gig and it was great fun! You can do so much more with it than you can on CDJ’s!

What’s the aim for you right now then? What’s the bigger picture, where do you see yourself heading etc?
I just want to continue playing more of these great gigs and making music enjoying my life! If I could I would DJ every night of the week I would! In the future, hopefully more festivals & international gigs!

Musically I have personally seen you progress through several genres from Hard House to the more ‘bosh’ sound if you like and also some slower stuff earlier in the night now, what would you say is your personal preference?
Well when I first started off Djing my plan of action was to play what ever style of music and take what ever gigs I could to get my name about, which worked well for me at the time. I have always been a trance/ house & techno DJ but I always played a variety to maximise the amount of gigs I had. Obviously I dont play Hard House or anything like that anymore, but was fun at the time! I dont have a favourite style of music it changes every day.. But the main genres are house, trance & tech depending on my set time!

You get to tour quite extensively now abroad, what’s been your best overseas experience?
I think my favourite gigs abroad have been either playing closing set @ Judgement Sunday BBC Radio 1 White Party or playing on the big stage @ Electrocity Festival, Poland. Both completely insane gigs!! One of the great things about these big events is that you get to party with all the other DJ’s on the line up, which is obviously good to network & develop new friends in the scene.

And your worst???
I like to take something positive from every gig I do, so dont like to think of any gig as my worst gig. Although the traveling to events can some times be a complete nightmare with delays etc!

Tell us a funny story from on tour……..
Well there am some stories I wish I could tell but I would probably get told off haha! Although I had a Bra thrown at me at one gig not long ago, so I put it on and was DJing with this big Bra on for most of my set, although it kept getting in the way as it was quite a big one! :-/

What’s the coolest thing you own?
A talking shoe

If your house was burning down and you could save 3 things what would they be?
iPhone, Mac and my dignity.

Finally, what’s your favourite Christmas song?
This one… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HF–TuXD6P0&feature=related

Always makes me feel very festive at Christmas, manly the 2nd guy in the video.

Thanks for the interview see you on the 18th! :)

Eddie Halliwell Interview

It’s certainly been a meteoric rise – Eddie is a major player in the dance music scene, having just been titled one of the ‘New Superstar DJ’s’ by Mixmag and ranked number 9 in its world top DJ’s of 2009, as well as voted top 20 for 4 consecutive years in the DJ Mag top 100 DJ’s poll.

To understand how all this has happened so quickly you have to see Eddie in a club. Fundamentally when everything else is swept away, DJ-ing is about making the dance floor erupt. Few possess the same incendiary talent as Eddie. Behind the mixer he seems frenetic, a hive of activity. Constantly manipulating the music with lightning cuts, layers of effects and slick scratches, he makes you question both your eyes and ears. Playing tracks from across the musical spectrum – trance, techno, house and electro – he harnesses the energy of every beat, synth, hi-hat, squelch and squeak, making each sound stand out and yell at the people on the dance floor. As the music thunders along he bounces to each twist and turn in the track, interacting with the crowd in a highly visual performance, connecting with them, compelling them to dance.

Here we grabbed Eddie for a brief chat ahead of the weekend…..

Hello Sir. How are you this fine day?
All good thanks.

It’s Godskitchen’s Christmas party, always a good one. Looking forward to it?
I always look forward to playing Godskitchen, even more so with it being the Christmas party – everyone will be in high spirits which will really add to the already amazing atmosphere in there.

What’s been your highlight of the year gig wise?
There’s been so many highlights – a few gigs that really stand out are Green Valley in Brazil, the Summadayze festivals in Australia and my Cream Amnesia residency in Ibiza..

We need to mention your Mixmag nomination for ‘Greatest DJ Of All Time.’ Amazing, no?
Definitely – I feel privileged to be part of a list of such genuine talent!

The ‘ED-IT’ tour has been receiving widespread acclaim. Will you be integrating elements of this on Saturday?
I’ll be using some of the equipment I use in EDIT to remix and re-edit tracks live on stage, but there’s a lot more that goes in to the actual stage show, including interactive visuals and special effects.

Tune of 2010?
Joris Voorn, The Secret

How will you be spending Xmas day?
At home with my family hopefully. I’ve been away the last few years and missed out on the family get togethers. This year I am hoping to catch up with friends and see family I rarely get to see.

And what about New Years Eve?
I am Djing in Puerto Rico, great place to bring in the new year!

Finally three words to describe your set, all Xmas themed?!
Full Festive Fire!

Thanks Eddie, see you at the weekend!

Ashley Wallbridge Interview

Ashley Wallbridge is undoubtedly one of the most prolific prospects on the progressive production scene in 2010, named by industry leaders such as Andy Moor and Gareth Emery as one of the hottest break-through DJ talents in the game. At just 22 years of age, his discography reads like the ‘who’s who’ list of EDM with releases of originals and remixes featuring names like Armin Van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Markus Schulz. There isn’t a global syndicated dance radio show denying regular homage to Ashley’s unique sound of progressive elements with his titles found on playlists, compilations and DJ sets. The future is bright for this rising star and he is just getting started…

Ashley, how are you?
Hey, Im great thanks.. Just in the studio living in nocturnal mode at the moment;)

So, this will be your Godskitchen debut, are you looking forward to it?
Very !!!, It’s a place iv wanted to play from an early age. Finally being able to grace the decks at Gods is a massive pleasure for me…

You’ve come a long way in such a short space of time, tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started at a very early age of about 8 years old. My parents got me a pair of decks for Christmas and I just took to them. Once I got comfortable on ‘’How to DJ’’ I entered a Radio1 under 18’s DJ competition at the age of 15 and came 2nd. Where I lost to a RnB DJ in a RnB club when I was playing progressive trance :/. This gave me a massive boost in confidence so I entered an over 18’s DJ competition with fake ID and won. But people found out my age (16) and it was in the newspaper and this gave me the break I needed. I started Producing music when I was 14 and just tested my tracks out while playing, At first they were pretty shocking and I had a lot of set backs but I was determined to make that first track which made people go crazy…..

Production seems to be something that comes naturally to you, is it fair to say you feel more comfortable in the studio or do you enjoy the DJing just as much?
I love both equally, My family has always been very musical so I was classically trained from a very early age. When I play in front of crowds I feel so lucky to be there and love every moment.

You’ve racked up – astonishingly – over 50 releases now, how long do you spend on each track?
Hmmmmmm, Most of the time it usually takes me approx 3 days to start and finish a track. But sometimes it can take more than 2 months…. Im actually still doing a track which I started in 2008. Need to pull my finger out on that one. My usual routine is once I have finished a new track, Test it in the Car, I pod, Television. If it sounds good il move on to test in the club. But almost 100% of the time there is something which needs to be altered after playing in front of a crowd..

What’s the setup you’re using in the studio at the moment?
Here comes the tech side ;) Mac quad core, Logic 9, Mackie HR824’s & Mackie HR624 monitor speakers ( I switch between both speakers to get a good range of frequencies ). SSL Compressor, Liquid mix 16 Chanel & a load of synths the length of a piece of string… My personal fav has to be the CS80 (Arturia), Endless sound modulation….

There’s a lot of debates floating around about which software / hardware is best, Logic vs Cubase, PC vs Mac, do you think this is really that important or does it really lie with the producer themselves and the ideas they can bring to the table?
Hmmmmmm, I personally don’t think its that important. Its like saying a Nike football boot is better than a Adidas football boot. If the sound you produce is quality then what really matters ??..There are good points and bad points for all but it’s a matter of being comfortable with your setup.

On the DJing side of things you have obviously played a lot of gigs around the world and also on these shores as well as your prestigious residency for Digital Society in Leeds. What would you say have been your best moment as a DJ?
Very hard to say really, I always enjoy playing in the UK because the vibe is different and because its home. But I would have to say playing at ASOT450 in Bratislava was very special. The whole night was amazing and the atmosphere was electric. Looking forward to playing ASOT 500 ;) .

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you play before?
To sum it up in a few short words it would be “Progressive with a trance influence & electronic twist” Sounds like a nice cocktail drink :)

Do you have any DJs that you particularly look up to or take inspiration from with your music?
There is a lot of people who I admire and take inspiration from. I have always been a massive fan of Mr Prydz. His productions are very unique and I love the power he creates. He is 1 DJ I haven’t yet met and would love to see him perform

With technology ever moving forward and more and more people moving towards laptops or using USB keys with CDJ2000’s, do you think this is taking some of the art out of DJing or do you see it as a natural progression that allows you to take a little more time doing some of the other important things that come with performing as a DJ?
It all depends what you feel most comfortable with. I went from Vinyl to CD and now and again I will use USB. No matter what you DJ with there will always be a huge skill involved. But I must say it doesn’t feel the same using USB, I feel like im cheating a little. But it is easier and does involve the same amount of skill, but without the hastle of carrying a load of CD’S around and having that cd skip now and again :/

Technology is always evolving for the better so I feel we just need to embrace it.

As a final word, what can we expect to hear from you at the end of the month? Do you have any special tricks up your sleeve for us?
I really cant wait, My album is 75% complete and I will be testing out a lot of new tracks for the first time, As for tricks up my sleeve. You will see very soon ;)

Thanks for the interview and il catch you all real soon.

Ash

Happydays…..

Our pleasure Ashley, see you on the 29th!

Ben Gold Interview

At just 25 years old Ben Gold is one of the most multi-talented names in the electronic dance scene. Ben combines a highly acclaimed career as a leading studio engineer with that of one of the brightest young stars in the trance scene, playing at some of the world’s leading clubs alongside world class DJ’s who all regularly fill their CD wallets with his latest works.

Hey Ben, long time no speak, how’s things?
Things are going really well, thanks!

How was NYE for you? You were at Monday Bar in Sweden weren’t you? Very nice!
I was. It was a really good party. I had heard only good things about their regular sea liner parties, so kinda knew I was in for a good one. That was my first time in Sweden, and I hope to go back soon.

Tell us a bit about your background, where did it all start for you?
I left college at 18 after spending 2 years studying Music Technology, before working in a studio at the back of a vinyl shop (it was called Dot Vinyl for those who used to buy vinyl), producing on average, 4 house bootlegs a week, which got pressed and distributed worldwide. 150’000 units were sold over 3 years! I left there to start engineering full time, which I still do today for the likes of Claudia Cazacu & Lee Osborne, just very few and far between.

I see you’ve been busy in the studio, tracks for Garuda and a very fine remix for Subculture amongst other things. How have they been going down?
Yeah I’ve had some real positive feedback from both DJ’s and from the people who buy my music. It was a real tricky one with the Solid Globe remix, as I’ve always loved the original, it’s a classic, but I never wanted to remix/remake records that had already been released and had had huge success. Although I remixed Platinum last year, Platinum isn’t a trance classic. In fact, Platinum was never scheduled for a release. I made it just for my sets, and then ended up sending it out to a selected few. There was a buzz on it, so High Contrast got in touch, and we put it out! I’ve played all the above in clubs, but the Solid Globe remix really worked on the floor at Monday Bar on NYE!

Any more projects in the pipeline we should keep our eyes (or ears, rather) peeled for?
My next single is out on Garuda in March. It’s called Pandemic. It’s more of my Be:Gold sound, which I dropped last year to focus on Ben Gold records! I’m heading to Amsterdam next month to work on one of the singles with W&W for the next E.P. Jonas Stenberg is over at mine next week to finish a track which we have been writing online. Really excited about this one. Amongst a few other things which are still in the early stages, but equally as exciting!

It seems like things have really started to move quite fast for you over the past year or so, when did you really start to notice things were taking off for you?
I think the timing of when I joined Ben Spier management was pretty spot on, certainly on the DJ side of things. At the beginning of 2010, I stopped engineering full time to focus on creating a sound for Ben Gold. Within the first couple of months of the year, I had Sapphire, Platinum, a new mix of Faces (which is just for my DJ sets), Break The Rules (with W&W) and a un-released Be:Gold record finished, which gave me the platform to develop my sound through-out the rest of the year. I played at some great parties in 2010, including The Sunrise Festival in Poland after Armin, a couple of sold out shows in Canada, and 2 really off-the-hook Garuda parties here in the UK. Although I’ve noticed the progress, I’m really enjoying making my music right now, so that’s what I’m focussing on! I have some great shows coming up over the next few months, including ASOT 500 (Holland), Bal En Blanc (Montreal, Canada), Goodgreef with Gareth Emery at Digital in Newcastle, Subculture with John O’Callaghan at Inside Out in Glasgow, and of course my debut at Godskitchen!!

I also see you were invited to talk to Judge Jules and Gareth Emery on Radio 1 recently, how did that come about?
I got a text from Gaz asking if I was up for doing an interview on Radio 1 and selecting a track to play on the show, which he was co-hosting with Jules. Of course, it was an opportunity that I jumped at. I had already sent Garuda my new single, so it made sense to have the world-exclusive play of it on Radio 1.

Outside of the studio, if you are ever out of the studio that is, what do you like to get upto?
If you follow me on twitter, you’ll know that I enjoy playing FIFA on my Xbox, usually online. In fact, I’ve played a few of the guys that follow me, both of which I won, ha! I also really enjoy cooking. I try and keep to a strict regime of waking up early and doing a ‘’normal’’ days’ work, then use cooking to relax, and un-wind. Followed by a few (sometime more) games of FIFA! Although, usually I end up back in the studio till silly o’clock!

There’s been many debates in recent times about the direction of Trance at the moment, alot of the DJs have slowed down their style, what are your thoughts on the direction the music should be heading?
I’m not sure I can make a judgement as to where the music should be going, but personally, I have slowed my music down, both in style and BPM. For those who remember, I used to be signed to Discover about 3 years ago, where I had a string of good releases. I was engineering full time at the time, and all of my clients were high energy, high BPM trance producers. And to be honest, I got bored. I felt I had pushed the style as far as I could take it, and was running out of ideas to keep it fresh. I spent 2009 experimenting with different styles, trying new things, and that’s when I came up with the Be:Gold alias, which then developed into records like Sapphire & Profile.

Who, for you, would you say is really pushing the boundaries of Trance music at the moment?
I have always been a huge fan of Mat Zo, for originality, the sounds he uses, and for producing just class records. W&W, Jonas Stenberg & Artento Divini are also producers that have their own sound (which is so important) and consistently writing records that destroy dance floors!

Where do you get your inspirations from for your tracks or DJ sets?
I listen to a lot of live sets/radio shows/podcast on my iPod at the gym, or when I’m travelling. In fact, I rarely leave the house without my iPod. With the help of a couple of friends outside of the scene, I keep up to date with all the releases, what’s new, who’s playing what. The good sets/shows/podcasts come to the studio with me. No one is creative all the time, so it’s good to stop and listen to other music.

I’ve always thought that you aren’t a DJ until you’re an entertainer. I think it’s important to show the crowd that you’re also having a great time. I started out clubbing, so I have always been aware of how important it is to work a dance floor. Anyone can play a set of the biggest sellers on beatport, so you need to be different.

Finally, if you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would it be?
Good question. Erm… somewhere hot! I’m bored of this weather!

Can’t wait for the 29th, see you down the front!

Cheers Ben!

Leon Bolier Mix & Interview

Leon Bolier was born in 1980 somewhere in the middle of Holland, and always was in love with moody music.

When he heard Energy 52′s Cafe Del Mar he fell in love with melodic trance, and quit producing hardcore house.

In 2002 and 2003 he got his first record deals, together with his brother Bart. They released some tracks on Bonzai/Banshee and FTM sublabels. Back then the first contacts with Armada front man Maykel Piron were established via Armin van Buuren, and this resulted in Leon remixing the first ever Armada release.

Nowadays Leon releases stuff on labels like Armada Music, Blackhole Recordings, Spinnin Records and Sweden-based Captured Music (Bart quit music producing due to the fact that he started his own company that provides in garden-architecture).

Hey Leon, how are you? Where are you? And what are you doing right now (except this interview of course)
Hi there, I just came back from Singapore this weekend, and am in the studio right now, finishing a couple of new singles and a collab with Marcus Schossow so I can include those in my set for ASOT 500.

You started out producing at an exceptionally young age, how did you get into it?
Ever since I heard the first eurodance charts hits I have been looking for ways to produce this ‘new kind of music’ (for me the music was totally new in the early 90s and I didn’t know about the house wave earlier on in Chicago and New York as well as I didn’t know about the ’88 summer of love in the UK and the autumn of love in Holland since I was a 12 year old kid). Before that I already had classical piano lessons and when I found the first software capable of ‘producing’ music I started doing so, combining what I learnt from the piano lessons with learning how to work with the software.

Your first project was with your brother Bart and you went under the name Subsphere, do you still work with your brother now or has that taken a back step?
Bart is a teacher and garden architect nowadays, happily married and he got three lovely kids. So yes, he has taken a back step.

What are you working on at the moment? Any new albums or productions we should look out for?
As mentioned before I am working on my next couple of singles, the collab with Marcus Schossow will be the first single to be released, in April. At the moment I am working on a new Streamlined compilation as well, to be released coming summer on my own Streamlined imprint which is a Spinnin’ Records sublabel.

So, at the end of the month you will be making your much anticipated debut for us in Birmingham, what have you heard about Godskitchen?
Godskitchen is a well-known and highly respected brand all over the world, legendary I’d say – hence I am definitely looking forward to debut for Godskitchen in Birmingham!

The ethos of this particular night is to embrace the new breed and give people like yourself their debuts and show everyone what the next generation of Trance DJs can bring to the table so…..what can people expect from you on the night?
Energetic driving music with the Bolier touch – I am pretty much influenced by so many kinds of music that it usually shines through in my music. Melodic music with a techno drive, or progressive music with an uplifting trance touch, everything is possible. My livesets however are way more uptempo and driving compared to my radiosets as I love to see some mayhem on the dancefloors!

The name of the night is ‘FutureGods’ who in your opinion is a ‘Future God’ of the scene?
Everyday new artists emerge and other artists disappear, the hard and most important thing for them is to maintain the pace, the quality and the creativity to actually break into the scene in the right way. Arty is doing that in a great way at the moment, let’s see what he’s up to in the future!

Tell us a bit about the scene in Holland at the moment, in years gone by the country seemed to have a very much Trance dominated scene but it looks like this is changing now?
Actually, ever since the early 00s there has been new styles and genres emerging, every time that happened people tended to say that ‘trance was dead’. 10 years ago it was progressive, later on it was electro, now its house. Only thing I always saw was that trance survived due to a passionate following. Good thing about new styles emerging is that those styles will influence trance one way or another – brings in fresh insights in the scene. Back to Holland: maybe you are referring to Trance Energy being changed into Energy – I’d rather see that as a natural progression in the scene with new influences being brought into the trance scene. Personally I noticed the last – let’s say 5 – years there has been new organisations pulling off great trance events that gained a bigger following by the year, for example the Luminosity, Intuition and Grotesque events, I have seen those events grow big in the last couple of years. Furthermore, only in the early 00s the scene was kinda trance dominated, but even then trance wouldn’t be the right type of music for the people-around-the-corner that just wanted to have a Saturday night out and have a couple of beers.

Your biog says you have a ‘Trance with a twist’ ethos to your work, tell us a bit about that, is this just for productions or does this translate into your DJ sets as well?
As mentioned above I like many kinds of music, not just trance or just electronic music for that matter. Every track I like, no matter what genre, influences me in the productions. When I am doing melodic trance productions you can hear my classical training as well, I guess. I will always be experimenting with other styles and combine them with trance – that’s just because I love melodic dance music so much. At the same time you have to convert this into music that has appeal to a trance dancefloor crowd as well, so it has to be driving and uplifting at the same time. This both shines through in my productions and my DJ sets.

Do you get much time to go to clubs yourself outside of work? If so which would you say are your favourites to go to?
Sometimes I do yes, when I have a weekend off. In that case I don’t really have a favourite club, rather I have favourite organisations that throw events, like the mentioned before Luminosity and Intuition events, or Armada nights for example. In Holland it’s about the brand and organisation, they do their events in different clubs every time.

What would you say is the coolest thing you have bought recently?
That’d be 15 vodka shots at Zouk Singapore. Production wise I just bought the FabFilter VST pack which is totally awesome.

Finally, if you were to have any super power, what would it be?
Teleportation, so I can skip the long boring flights every weekend!

Thanks Leon, see you at the end of the month!

Ferry Tayle Interview & Promo Mix

French producer & DJ Ferry Tayle was born in 1982. His first musical experience was with jazz. He started playing the saxophone at the age of 7. He became interested in electronic music by discovering Jean-Michel Jarre’s first album. After 14 years of jazz music he decided to move into electronic music. He bought his first decks in 1999 and began to DJ. In 2000, he took his first steps in his professional development in the biggest club in the east of France called “Le Colysée”. In just one year he had the chance to share the decks with some big names like Cosmic Gate, Darude, U96 and very well known French house DJ, David Guetta.

Hey Ferry, how’s things?
Hey, very good, thanks! Very very busy in the studio these last months by working on my 3rd album (my 2nd solo one). It takes me a lot of time because i try to explore a lot of different styles and see how i could combine all to make something interesting.

You are part of an elite club of DJs coming out of France, how does it feel to follow in the foot steps of icons such as Laurent Garnier and David Guetta?
I don’t consider myself as part of the french’s elite club of DJs because i’m not known in France. Laurent Garnier is a pure icon and thanks to David Guetta, the DJing is becoming more popular in the eyes of the french people. I just saw today that he is the 2nd best seller in France (last year he was 1st) and this is just amazing for our country to have a DJ who sells as much as some other “regular” artists.

But thanks for the compliment…hope one day, i could really join them.

Tell us a bit about the French scene, we don’t hear much about it over here and what we do hear seems to be quite House orientated? If that is the case, what made you move more towards Trance?
Well, in term of Trance, France is definitely the black hole of Europe for this. We don’t have a scene here. Some little associations try to push it but they don’t have support by the big radio stations & major companies. Beside this, you can see only the DJ Mag Top 5 DJs playing in Paris sometimes. So at least it’s already cool. Here the club scene is more about House & Minimal. I could be in touch of Trance because i grew up near the german borderline, so i took my influence there !

You’re due to make your Godskitchen debut for us at the end of the month, have you heard much about the club?
Well, i think for the most DJs, Godskitchen is very mythic. I heard about this for so many years and always saw some so fantastic line up that i feel very very honor now to be invited to play there ! I’m very excited about that !

Tell us what you’ve been working on recently….
As i said above, i’m working on my album currently but i focus mainly on my next single (that would be part of my album too) and it’s my first vocal track so i don’t want to miss it and release something good.

What set up do you use in the studio?
I’m working on PC. I use Ableton Live as sequencer with different vsts. I have also a Virus Ti Snow and i bought 1 year ago a JP8000 but it’s more for the collection.

How would you describe your job to someone you didn’t know?
It’s about melodic & emotional tracks, combined with some banging baseline. I really try to tell a story every time i produce a track.

What would you say have been the highlights of your career so far?
Well, i had 3 big highlights that were 3 turn of my career. First it was my meeting with Laurent ‘Airwave’ Veronnez. He became one of my best friend and we had great adventure together under our project Capetown during the last 3 years. But to reassure everyone, Capetown is not finished or split, it’s just that we focus more on our own career currently, but we will be back soon together ;) . After that, it was definitely to play at Trance Energy. It was a child’s dream and i never expected to play there one day and thanks to the fans, i was voted to play there. Still thank you for & to them. But i couldn’t be there today without my new homelabel : Enhanced and the fantastic job that Will Holland & Dan Peters do for me and the other artists. I’m lucky to have met some such great guys. Thank you to them.

Do you feel more comfortable in the DJ booth or in the studio? How do they compare?
Mmmh…hard questions ! To be in a quiet place, i prefer to be in the studio, but the DJ Booth is a kind of my Rollercoaster Park ! So 50/50 :)

Tell us a bit about your DJ name, how did that come about?
Awww…it’s a long story…It started when i was 19/20 years old. I didn’t want a name with DJ something…so i searched about a good nickname instead of my real name. When people started to listen to me in some small webradio or clubs, they told me that when i play, i tell a kind of Fairy Tale. As a big fan of Ferry Corsten, i decided to transform Fairy Tale into Ferry Tayle without expected to reach this level one day. And believe me or not, i never met him in real !

Where is your favourite place to travel to?
Definitly & without doubt : Amsterdam ! It’s one of my favorite city ever. I love the architecture, the people there. I don’t know, it’s like this city has a big soul ! I feel at home there

What do you do away from music to relax?
I try to spend a lot of time & chill with my girlfriend, family & friends…I have a chance to be surrounded by a great “team” that help me to stay on Earth & escape sometimes from the Music Biz pressure. They are definitely a big part of my current success even if they are in the shadow !

Thanks Ferry, see you at the end of the month!
