OMD To Re-Open Legendary Liverpool Club Eric’s

OMD To Re-Open Legendary Liverpool Club Eric’s

PIONEERS of the British electronic music scene, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, will be the first band to play at the relaunched Eric’s club on Mathew Street, Liverpool on Saturday 10th September 2011.

The band will interrupt their world tour to return home to play the special launch event. OMD’s hits include Joan of Arc, Electricity, Messages, Souvenir, Sailing on the Seven Seas and Enola Gay.

“If Eric’s had not existed then neither would OMD! Even though you cannot recreate what Eric’s meant to our generation over 30 years ago, it will be fun to play on the same stage again remembering the past whilst hopefully celebrating a new and different future.” said singer Andy McCluskey.

“It’s quite fitting that OMD, who played their first ever gig at Eric’s over 30 years should come back to re-open the new Eric’s. We’re over the moon to welcome such an iconic band back to the venue but we’re also looking forward to showcasing the next wave of new talent over the forthcoming months at club” said Ethan Allen Music Director of Eric’s.

Eric’s influence on the music scene was legendary. With early gigs from Blondie, Buzzcocks, The Clash, Elvis Costello, The Jam, Joy Division, The Police, The Sex Pistols and The Stranglers. Liverpool’s music scene in the late 1970′s was an exciting and dynamic place to be. Everyone was either in a band, in-between bands or were forming a band. In the midst of all this activity was Eric’s Club – a small discreet venue that was a favoured haunt for the people who would later form bands such as The Teardrop Explodes, Echo & The Bunnymen and Frankie Goes To Hollywood. So it was quite apt that Eric’s was the venue of choice for the debut performance of Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark in October 1978.

From the beginning Paul Humphreys and Andy McCluskey launched their own unique style of electronic melodies and thoughtful lyrics that helped form OMD’s reputation for intelligent pop. OMD have managed to occupy that rare space between the alternative and the commercial, writing songs about such diverse subjects as airplanes, oil refineries, religious icons and movie stars. These songs capture perfectly the balance between energy and emotion; a pop melancholia that echoed around the walls of Eric’s Club over thirty years ago and that still sounds fresh and exciting today. Their latest studio album History of Modern was released in 2010.

Supporting OMD are Liverpool band, Kids on Bridges, who promise to bring their own blend of Dirty Filthy Electro Pop to the masses. “Kids on Bridges wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for bands such as OMD. To play with a band that has crossed generations and pioneered electro and is still as relevant in today’s electronic generation is a great honour. To play with them at Eric’s where it all began is a dream and it’s why you get into playing music” said Kids on Bridges frontman Christian Bragg.

Eric’s will re-open its doors to the public this September with a selection of pre-launch gigs. An official launch is planned in October to mark 35 years anniversary since the venue first opened. Listings will be announced over coming weeks.

June 2011 sees Puressence release their new single, ‘When Your Eyes Close’, an edited version of the track found on their brand new album ‘Solid State Revival.’

A soaring, emotion-soaked beauty, ‘When Your Eyes Close’ features the guest vocals of luminous American folk-rock legend Judy Collins alongside those of the band’s frontman James Mudriczki. Collins’ pure vocal dovetails beautifully with that Mudriczki, the owner of an extraordinary and distinctive vibrato bolted to raw power and a fantastic range.

Collins, a convert to the Manchester-based band since she heard their 2007 album ‘Don’t Forget To Remember’, says Puressence, “swept me off my feet when I first heard them. They’re a very moving experience, very, very special indeed, and they have such amazing songs. And where did James learn to sing like that? His voice is an instrument of such clarity and purity and flexibility, it just does you in.”

Puressence have always been about the emotion since they formed in the early nineties after schoolmates Mudriczki and Tony Szuminski (drums) first met Kevin Matthews (bass) and founding guitarist Neil MacDonald on the bus to The Stone Roses’ legendary Spike Island show in 1989. Puressence married the presence and attitude of the Roses to a haunting and molten guitar rock that last hit the heights during the era of Joy Division and Echo & The Bunnymen. After two singles on Manchester’s 2 Damn Loud label in 1992 and one for Rough Trade’s singles club, Island Records won the race to sign them. 1996’s self-titled debut album and 1998’s Only Forever followed, with ‘This Feeling’ breaking the UK Top 40 single chart that year. “All I Want” was another Top 40 hit, as was ‘Walking Dead’ from 2002’s beats-laced Planet Helpless album.

All these tracks were included on their 2009 compilation ‘Sharpen Up The Knives’, which drew on the band’s Island Records years between 1996 and 2002. Plus there was Mudriczki’s spine-shivering solo version of ‘Che’, originally recorded for 2008’s Judy Collins tribute album Born To The Breed, also featuring the likes of Leonard Cohen, Joan Baez, Chrissie Hynde and Dolly Parton, though Collins thinks ‘Che’, “was the most interesting thing on the whole album. So different and wonderfully fresh.”

On stage, James’ thousand yard stare is legendary among fans (though he always breaks into a broad smile between songs): “it is a really draining experience for me, to get out what I need to for the tunes,” he says. “I can’t just casually let the words drip from my mouth; I have to really feel it. The intensity comes from believing it, and letting it out. It’s like when you hear Scott Walker and Ian Curtis – no way were they faking what they were singing about.”

That intensity can be traced to growing up in North Manchester, “one of most deprived parts of the country. I can only draw on my life experiences, to those people close to me, and channel that in the music. I’m singing about love, deceit, being let down, good times, bad times. Stuff people in Victorian times wrote about, that people will be writing about in five hundred years. But it proves that good can come from the bad.”

Not forgetting the band’s first independently released album in ‘Don’t Forget To Remember’ (with new guitarist Lowell Killen in place), ‘Sharpen Up The Knives’ represented the band’s real big new beginning, as it included two new tracks ‘Raise Me To The Ground’ and ‘Our Number’s Oracle’. Both signalled a return to Puressence, knives sharpened, back to their brilliant and most emotionally charged best. Judy Collins likes the album so much, she sings on a second track too, the album’s smouldering seven-minute opener “Swathes Of Sea Made Stone”.

Especially loved in their Manchester homeland and also Southern Europe (they play to tens of thousands in Greece), Puressence are, as July Collins says, very, very special. Starting with “When Your Eyes Close’, let Puressence sweep you off your feet too.

ALBUM ‘MAD BY MOONLIGHT’

RELEASED 12TH JUNE

ON STRANGER RECORDS

Thomas Tantrum are:

Megan Thomas – vocals, guitar

Dave Wade Brown – drums, vocals

Dave Miatt – guitar, vocals

Jim Shivers – bass, vocals

‘Mad By Moonlight’ is the glorious second album from Southampton’s super talented Thomas Tantrum.  A polished, verging on perfect indie-pop proposition, the all new Thomas Tantrum come bearing scrumptious melodies, lyrical sophistication and, for the very first time, the occasional synth…

Thomas Tantrum have created an album based solely around sleep, or lack of it. Including references to female insanity, insomnia and things that go bump in the night, each song is effortlessly wrapped in a dream like sonic cotton wool. It’s twelve tracks are influenced by each members love for wildly varying music whether it be The B-52s, Abba, The Sugarcubes or The Cure.

Thomas Tantrum released their eponymous debut in 2008 to great critical acclaim with the likes of Lily Allen and Glasvegas hailing them as their favourite new band. Since then they’ve undergone some major changes. They’ve enlisted the talents of a new drummer, Dave Wade Brown, and front woman Megan Thomas’s voice has matured and blossomed but still keeps it’s wry innocence, charm and wit.

Previous single ‘Sleep’ is an absolute charmer of a song. It kicks off with a Lulu- worthy wail from Megan and builds into a skewed- soul anthem worthy of any indie disco’s dancefloor. It’s partner ‘Cold Gold’ talks of Taming The Shrew and the story of a friend being bed-ridden suffering from depression.

The next single to be taken from ‘Mad By Moonlight’ is ‘Hot Hot Summer’ which is possibly the most straightforward pop song on the album. It’s a prime example of their talents for writing swooning pop-punk with killer choruses. All in all they’ve written a beautiful album full of carefree pop and heartfelt emotion.
