Alastair Campbell Interviewed by Henry Sutton at Harrogate Theatre, Harrogate – 20th July 2011

Alastair Campbell changed British politics. Whatever your opinion of the forthright former New Labour Director of Communications, it’s impossible to deny his influence on the way the media portray – and people perceive – the workings of Westminster.

For years he was at the heart of the Blair Government. A former Daily Mirror reporter and political editor, he faced his own demons in alcohol and stress before becoming one of the most influential people in the country through his work with the Labour party. The third volume of his unexpurgated version of his crucial diaries is published in July. Campbell will be interviewed by curator of the 2011 Summer Festival Literature programme, author and journalist, Henry Sutton.

An Evening with Kate Atkinson at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, Harrowgate – 15th July 2011

Adored by readers, this is one event you won’t want to miss. The York-born Atkinson’s latest novel, Started Early Took My Dog, part of her Jackson Brodie series, is in part homage to the beauty of north Yorkshire. This is a chance to indulge in her brilliant writing in the most brilliant of settings – the majestic Fountains Abbey.

Parking is available at the West Gate Car Park at Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal.

Wendy Holden & Laurie Graham at Wesley Methodist Chapel, Harrogate – 15th July 2011

Wendy Holden had a career in magazine journalism but knew she wanted to write; growing up near to Haworth and The Brontes, she was awed by how the sisters drew inspiration from the misty moors, as well as by Charlotte’s tiny waist as demonstrated by the dresses in display in the Parsonage. How she could write so much while being so tightly trussed? Her first novel, Simply Divine, where a lowly hack writes for a celebrity socialite, is inspired by her own experience writing for Tara Palmer-Tomkinson.

She chats to fellow former journalist turned novelist, Laurie Graham, whose books include The Great Husband Hunt – in an event that promises frivolous hilarity.

Professor Tom McGuffog MBE: A Question of Identity at The Old Swan Hotel, Harrogate – 15th July 2011

From the supermarket barcode to getting the right drug to the right person; nearly every aspect of our lives has been completely transformed by the barcode. Shopping, going to the cinema, using a library card, aviation, even scientists tracking different plants and species – it’s all controlled by barcodes. Talking about how the barcode has revolutionised our lives is the Former Head of the UK delegation to the UN for trade facilitation and e.business, Professor Tom McGuffog MBE.

Harrogate International Festival has this year been awarded funding by PRSF to use barcodes (more specifically QR codes, or ‘Quick Response’ codes) to provide a brand new artistic platform and a new way for audiences to experience art. Keep a look out for QR codes around Harrogate that you can scan with a ‘smart’ mobile phone to gain access to specially commissioned works and exclusive news on 2011’s artists.

Paloma Faith at Harrogate International Centre, Harrowgate – 14th July 2011

Paloma Faith is a one-woman cult. She appeared in Heath Ledger’s final movie – Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus – fitting, considering in a previous life she was the magician’s assistant sawn in half. She began her quirky career in cabaret and burlesque clubs, once joked about slumming it at festivals saying, “anywhere you can’t wear stilettos just isn’t worth going” (we’re sure Harrogate will meet her approval!). Following a platinum-selling debut album, the 2011 BRIT Award nominee has taken the pop world by storm with hits such as Stone Cold Sober, New York and Smoke and Mirrors. This promises to be an original, engaging must-see event.
