Three great bands take to the stage as STAND! throws a showcasing party night. Enthralling southern soul from Phantom Limb plus horn-fuelled Latin funk from Size Nine AND dance floor beats courtesy of Nuke Bnana

Headlining are Phantom Limb, with their own take on southern soul, carrying some beautiful gospel and country influences with them. Inspiration from Aretha Franklin, the Band and the Staple Singers gives this Bristol based outfit the delicacy to convey the type of honesty that “only comes from singing about the truth”.

One of BBC London presenter Robert Elms’ albums of 2010, it is easy to see why artists such as Candi Staton, Solomon Burke, The Avett Brothers and more recently Rumer have requested Phantom Limb support them.

Size Nine is an eight piece band from South London. They combine the tightest rhythm section and the rowdiest horns behind the gritty, thought-provoking lyrics and soulful tones of Brixton’s finest songstress, Breezy Lee Ethelion.

Nuke Bnana is the brain child of another Brixtonian – this time DJ/musician Jonny Bolax. New for 2011 STAND! sought some help from Mr Bolax to describe his band – “With a blend of extreme syncopation, tribal sonics and challenging lyrics, this new group is sure to contort dance floors from here to Uranus.” Thanks Jonny!

Ska supergroup brings a “Bigga” sound to STAND!
An explosive mix of the heritage of Jamaican Ska, the improvisation of jazz and the influences of boogie, Latin and Dub delivered by an all-star line up that is SKATRONIKS JAMAICA.
Band leader Clifton “Bigga” Morrison (ASWAD) on keys and vocals leads this extra ordinary collective of musicians, earning praise from Mark Lamarr, Jamaican music legend Ernest Ranglin (whose hand written sleeve notes grace the Skatroniks’ album artwork) as well as the Skatalites declaring that “this is the band we hand over the baton to”.
Born from their time with the renowned festival entertainers Jazz Jamaica, the Skatroniks was a natural evolution. Allowing the musicians to immerse themselves deeper into the Jamaican ska song book, encompassing the earlier boogie shuffles synonymous with the Blue Beat record label and bringing in new creative talent such as jazz trumpet maestro Jay Phelps, Morrison has created an exciting new band that delivers not just in beautifully crafted studio recordings but also dynamic live performances.

The Musicians
Clifton “Bigga” Morrison (vocals and keys) – a founder member of “Spartans”, “Creation Rebel” and “Jazz Jamaica” he has also played with Freddie McGregor, Marcia Griffiths, John Holt, Roland Alphonso, the Ethiopians – the list goes on.
Kenrick Rowe (drums) – one of the most sought after session drummers in the business with a CV spanning jazz, reggae and ska including such artists as Courtney Pine, Sugar Minott, Janet Kay, Dennis Brown and Alton Ellis.
Don Chandler (bass) – a great bass player who has been working all over the world since the early 90s playing with the likes of The Congos, Black Uhuru, Tippa Irie, Mica Paris, Leroy Sibbles, Junior Marvin and more.
Trevor and Brian Edwards (trombone & sax) – two brothers at the heart of the Skatroniks horn section. Their credits include Aswad, the Wailers, the Skatalites, Lilly Allen, the Redskins, Jazz Warriors and Gregory Isaacs.
Tony Uter (percussion) – the elder statesman of the band and drumming since the 1950s Tony has played with Linton Kwesi Johnson, Denis Bovell, Rico Rodrigues and many, many more.
Alan Weekes (guitar) – another top musician who emerged from the British reggae scene of the 1980s and has since worked with Art Blakey, Carol Thompson, Joss Stone, Jackie Mitto, and Victor Romeo Evans amongst others.
Jay Phelps (trumpet) – with his instantly recognisable warm tone, Canadian –born Jay is at the forefront of creative young jazz musicians in the UK and has already worked with Dennis Rollins, Wynton Marsallis, Jamie Cullum, Amy Winehouse, George Benson and Hugh Masakela.

Zigaboo Modeliste, legendary New Orleans drummer and founder member of the Meters comes to STAND! on Wednesday July 13th 2011.
Zigaboo will be joined on stage by London based band, The Coalminers for this great night and the audience can expect to hear many of the classic Meter’s tunes such as Cissy Strut, People Say and Hey Pocky Way as well as Zigaboo’s recent releases.
Plus Support from Giles Robson and the Dirty Aces.
Joseph “Zigaboo” Modeliste is a master drummer, rhythm innovator, percussionist, and New Orleans legend. The most highly acclaimed drummer ever to hail from the Crescent City, Ziggy has been at the creative centre of funk music for over three decades. His ground-breaking work as a member of the internationally acclaimed R&B group, The Meters (featuring on all their original albums), as well as his collaborations with artists like Keith Richards, Robert Palmer, and Dr. John, has earned unparalleled levels of respect from musicians and fans alike.
Ziggy’s playing style is unique, he is a master of creating grooves and developing new concepts in funk drumming, demonstrating that “Modeliste is the most brilliant American funk percussionist of the contemporary era!”
With his syncopated rhythms and his second line funk styles he is more than up to the task of carrying the titles of the King of the Funky Drums, Percussion Maestro and Godfather of Groove, Zigaboo Modeliste takes listeners to levels of funk that only he could possibly reach!
Ziggy’s work has been sampled extensively by artists such as Queen Latifah, Run DMC, NWA, Ice Cube, Salt N’ Pepa, Cypress Hill, EPMD, Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest, and the Beastie Boys, to name but a few. In 2005 he won a BMI award for “Can’t Stop Won’t Stop” (Young Gunz) and his drum sound also provided the main loops for Amerie’s “1Thing”, which was nominated for two Grammy’s and topped the US R&B charts.
His musical genius and original funk style are consistently showcased throughout a catalogue of over 200 songs, written either individually or with The Meters, seeing releases spanning over 56 albums.
He has also contributed to the soundtracks of Two Can Play That Game, Jackie Brown, Drum Line, 8 Mile and Hancock.

With a highly successful recording career spanning eighteen years, and a reputation as one of the UK’s finest vocal talents, David McAlmont is set to play his first hometown concert in Croydon on June 23rd 2011 at STAND!

The Croydon show comes, fittingly, as the finale to David’s tour celebrating the launch of his first live album and DVD. “Live from Leicester Square” is a double disc CD, recorded at the Leicester Square Theatre in November 2010. The concert re-united McAlmont with Bernard Butler (Suede) and features “Yes” and “You Do” from their 1995 collaboration “The Sound of McAlmont and Butler”.

David McAlmont has collaborated with an array of the UKs finest composers, including Craig Armstrong, Boo Hewerdine, Gary Clark and Courtney Pine. Most recently he garnered further critical plaudits with the song cycle ‘The Glare’ recorded with minimalist legend, Michael Nyman.

Tiger Tiger is Situated within the grants building, a great location in the heart of croydons high street, With 7 bars, a lovely club plus a wonderful restaurant, we have everything all under one roof, there is just one place to visit.
Doors open at 7pm where you will enjoy your 2 course meal and sit back and relax with your half a bottle of wine, The Cabaret show will kick off at 9pm. Then once the show has finished experience all of our tiger rooms. including our groovy wonderland where you can dance to all 70′s and 80′s hits.

Starters and small bites

Soup of the day – with herb croutons
Chicken Caesar Sald – cos lettuce,shaved grano padano,anchovies and caesar dressing
Fine smoked Salmon – with salsa verdi,horseradish creme fraiche and granary bread
Coarse duck and green peppercon pate – with ciabatta and cranberries in red wine
