The Best in live stand-up comedy at The Glee Club, Birmingham – 5th August 2011

Kevin McCarthy

- The Man -
Kevin was born in Dartford, Kent at the age of 32. He progressed to the dizzy heights of a truck driver. More by accident than luck, he entered the showbusiness world via an ‘open mic’ spot at one of London’s less salubrious comedy venues, ‘The Tunnel Club’. Far from scaring him away he found a craving for the spotlights.

James Goldbury

Currently storming clubs all over his native Ireland, Dublin comedian James Goldsbury finally gets a chance to pop his UK comedy cherry! With bizarre comedy accents galore he’s one to watch.

“His words come faster than a muppet spitting popcorn!” Metro

John Fothergill

John has slotted into the comedy circuit like a three pinned plug combining a unique style of embarrassing sexual revelations with a rural innocence. He has also toured the nations universities, done two tours of Ireland and performed in Hong Kong and regularly at the Edinburgh Festival. In 1997 John performed a month long run at the Adelaide International Comedy Festival, and in 1999 he appeared on BBC 1’s The Stand Up Show, and became a regular member of the Comedy Store’s highly regarded Cutting Edge team

“Hilarious stories delivered superbly” The Guardian

Mike Bubbins

In mid 2008, for the first time, Mike held a microphone whilst not wearing a jumpsuit. Having followed the not particularly well-worn career path of professional rugby player, PE teacher and Elvis Tribute Artist he jumped in to the world of stand-up comedy.

Since then he has firmly established himself on the comedy circuit. Entertaining audiences and gigging at some of the best festivals and comedy clubs in the country. He’s performed his critically-acclaimed debut solo show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, supported Rhod Gilbert and Rich Hall on their national tours, and appeared as a regular guest comedian on BBC Radio Wales.

Mike is also busy writing and acting. He played the challenging role of dancing village idiot in Rhod Gilbert’s Return to Llanbobl, and further shattered Welsh stereotypes by playing a coal miner in an Aneurin Bevan biopic. He competed at the Porthcawl Elvis Festival 2010 with the comedy-documentary he wrote and presented. Controversially, (according to Mike) he was robbed of victory. Absolutely robbed. By six other people.

“Hilariously gifted. Truly funny” Rhod Gilbert
“Life-affirming observational comedy” South Wales Echo

Desi Central Comedy Show at The Glee Club, Birmingham – 24th July 2011

Shazia Mirza

International award-winning comedian and Guardian Weekend magazine columnist.

Shazia Mirza works all over the world and has toured the US, Sweden, Denmark, France, Holland and Germany. She has appeared on 60 Minutes (CBS), Last Comic Standing (NBC) and Have I got News for You (BBC).

Shazia could have married a rich man and lived in a mansion on The Bishops Avenue, with servants, bidets, and horses. Instead she chose to drive up and down the country for as little as ten pounds, staying in dirty lurid bed and breakfasts trying to make people laugh. She thought of giving up, but no Muslim man wants to marry her now that she’s dabbled in jokes and fingered a few white men on the 38 bus.

‘Mirza – the Lenny Bruce of female stand-up’ – Metro

‘Her laconic one-liners represent something quite unique in modern comedy’ – The Guardian

Don Biswas

High energy raw and punchy one-liner merchant/story teller.

Some of his gags draw on the fact he has Aspersers Syndrome and Dyspraxia (poor coordination and organisation) and others about his Indian heritage (usually in the form of one-liners/gags). However, Don will generally talk about a wide variety of subject matters from politics to downright silly subjects, such as car insurance.

Don has recently done successful open spots for some of the biggest clubs in London including The Comedy Store, Comedy at The Hob and Monkey Business Comedy Club (main night) as well as sets for smaller clubs such as Terry The Stand Up and Bubble Bath Comedy.

‘Great Comic Timing’ – Monkey Business Comedy Club

Marlon Davis

Winner of FHM Stand Up Hero 2009

With a Brown Eyed Boy series on MTV under his belt, Marlon Davis is a bright young comedian, improviser and actor who embraces his work with energy and charm, embodying his characters and delivering his material with skilful observations. His recent TV appearances include ‘Edinburgh Comedy Fest Live’ (BBC Three), ‘The Steve K Amos Show’ (BBC2), ‘The Five O’Clock Show’ (Channel 4).

Marlon has supported Kevin Bridges, Michael McIntyre and Alan Carr on tour and is performing at clubs, arts centres and theatres all over the UK.

Marlon’s act is inspired from his upbringing, exploring urban Britain tackling its social issues with skilful characterisations.

‘Bursts on to the stage like a breath of fresh air, with impish grin, boyish enthusiasm and an effortlessly open, confident style’ – Chortle

‘Davis is charming, with a winning smile, his passion in acting out all the little scenarios that comprise his set is enviable’ – Chortle

Tarun Mohanbhai

Endearing yet hilarious New Zealand born ‘Indian Guy’.

Tarun was born in 1972 to a grocer in a migrant Indian family who migrated to New Zealand in the 1940’s. Tarun first began his comedy career at school entertaining his classmates, but it wasn’t until 1996 that he first performed live at Kitty O’Brien’s comedy evenings.

Since hitting the comedy stage in 1996, Tarun has produced, written and starred in four sell-out TV2 International LAUGH! Festival shows including 2001’s ‘Tarun Mohanbhai: is a Curry Muncher’ and 2002’s acclaimed ‘D’aranged Marriage’, which is still successfully touring worldwide.

His stand-up runs the gambit from astute and insightful material about being Indian and living outside of India to Bollywood style song and dance routines and Michael Jackson as you have never heard him before.

‘Tarun’s ability to create believable compelling characters by simply changing his voice, posture and facial expressions is remarkable to watch’ – Waikato Times

Having made their mark on the weekend scene in Birmingham with regular sell out parties, Face have teamed up with Cream Ibiza Classics to throw their hugest party yet on August 6th at the huge Rainbow Warehouse.  With a capacity of over 2500 across The Rainbow Street closure, Warehouse and Garden there has been no expense spared… expect high levels of outstanding sound, lighting and production that we will be enthralling like no other event before.

Playing for Face will be boomty legend and Fabric mix CD curator, as well as Classic Records boss Derrick Carter. Next up is Jamie Jones.  The Hot Creations boss – alongside pal Lee Foss with whom he also records as Hot Natured – has reinvented a certain strain of disco fuelled, vocal, sexy and slo-mo house music for labels like Crosstown Rebels as well as his own and is a party starting DJ like few others today.

Tim Green is next up, a Brit talent whose Cocoon and Dirtybird productions get caned by everyone from Ritchie Hawtin to Josh Wink, Tiefschwarz to Steve Lawler.  Also on is irregular Spanish resident and ever rising star Edu Imbernon of Suara records amongst others.  He’s a regularly found atop the Beatport chart and is a fine selector to boot. Residents Bunny, Scott Bleepz and Elliot Croft complete the Face offerings.

Playing for Cream on the street will be old school house and garage heroes like Jeremy Healy, Tall Paul, Alistair Whitehead and Brandon Block plus a live pa from Angie Brown, whilst more than 25 DJs will play out in the garden… surely something for everyone at one of Birmingham, Face and Cream’s biggest events ever.  This is sure to be the best show of the summer.
